In 1997 I turned 57 and lost my job. I had wrestled with depression most of my adult life, but that fall, chronic depression devolved into obsession with suicide. I was home alone during the day with nothing but my thoughts. And my thoughts were morbid and hopeless!
I was stressed out, anxious about the future and every day I nursed resentment over past events. I felt hopeless, worthless and incredibly sad. I caught a cold that lingered for months. I felt like a burden to everyone, like I was just taking up space that someone else could better use. I felt paralyzed and shut down.
The thing is, I KNEW BETTER. I'd gone through years of therapy and hundreds of self-help books and tapes, taken certification courses in behavior modification, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, hypnosis and personal development and dozens of seminars. I practiced Yoga and I meditated. In spite of all that information and knowledge, I spun out of control and crashed.
Fortunately, my years of studying how the mind works started to kick in. I reached out for support from people and sources I trusted and respected. I believed I could pull myself out of the morass, I just didn't know where to start.
My journey to well-being began with an investigation
of what I was thinking!
Through an extraordinary event in a Dallas bookstore, my husband and I discovered an amazingly simple solution. Without this incredible tool I never would have been able to find out what I was thinking and make peace with my mind.
Using this simple method, I recognized that depression is nothing more than out of control thoughts. So are anxiety, worry, irritation and anger, not to mention physical problems like high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
Imagine this: your mind is a precious gift that is intended to be used to better yourself and the world. Since that belief came from years of study and investigation, I pulled out some of the books and tapes that had helped me. I read and listened with a new attentiveness that was fueled by desperation and disgust with my life. I memorized poems, quotes and passages and repeated them hundreds of times a day.
Each time one of those despairing thoughts tried to crawl into my mind, I pulled an idea from my toolkit to defeat the invader. At first this was like a war; I was barraged by dark, negative self-talk.
But I started to notice some things:
First, there was a consistent pattern. The same words triggered the same body sensation which triggered the same dark feelings which triggered another thought. It was a loop, it went on and on, whether I paid attention to it or not. That's what makes depression, anxiety and stress so debilitating--it goes on under the radar of our conscious attention. It's easy to ignore the effects at first because they seem so small, but we forget that the effects are cumulative.
Second, I associated most body sensations with fear and anxiety. For those feelings I substituted a quote from Vernon Howard, "A feeling has just passed through me which I will not label in any way." Every day I repeated this--over and over--until I stopped connecting my body sensations to unfortunate ideas and beliefs.
Third, I am my own thought generator. When I thought I was insufficient, then I was. If I entertained fear thoughts, I felt fearful. I had feelings attached to practically every thought and I had negative thoughts attached to almost every body sensation. No wonder I was always depressed!
Fourth, I realized I can change my thoughts, like flipping a light switch. When I saw that much of my thinking was a response to labels I put on my feelings, the light of understanding flooded those dark areas of my mind.
I became a non-judgmental, non-resistant observer of my mind. I watched and listened to my thoughts with curiosity. I scrutinized my mind and my emotions. I changed the tone of voice I used with myself, and most important of all, I changed the conversation I had with myself.
That led to authentic, rewarding relationships with other people, especially with my husband.
Today I am happy, healthy, enthusiastic and productive--and you can be as well!
